Losing the internet is never a fun game! It always seems to happen at the worst times, like in the middle of an important zoom meeting, or right at the ending of a gripping thriller…it’s never when you do not need it.
Nowadays, we rely on the internet more than ever, with more things moving online by the minute. This is why your WiFi and internet connection is so important. When your router loses the internet, it can not only be frustrating, but you may be missing out on vital information, services and connections. So, you will need to know how to fix the issue.
But first, you will have to know why your router keeps losing the internet connection, and how this can happen in the first place!
Why does my router keep losing the internet?
When your internet connection cuts out, it can be so annoying. Sometimes, your phone is connected, but your computer is not, or the router itself just fails to work. You’ve tried turning it off and back on again, but it just keeps happening, so why is the router losing the internet?
The most common reason your router keeps dropping its connection, or losing its signal is because there is insufficient power or range, and the network is overloaded. This means that you are draining the router too much, in relation to its capability.
For instance, there are probably too many devices connected to the router at one time. Think about it…you’re at home…you’re scrolling through social media on your phone, whilst you stream the latest episode of your favorite show on Netflix, whilst simultaneously catching up on work on your laptop.
The best part is, everyone else in your home is probably doing the same thing, too. Too many devices on the same network can really overload the router and cause it to fail, or disconnect from the internet frequently.
Whilst this is the most common reason that you router may lose the internet frequently, it is not the only reason. There are a few other ways this could be happening, and you should check to see if they are the ones causing the issue.
Most common reasons router loses internet connection
One of the most common reasons routers lose internet connection is if the internet service provider, or ISP is not functioning properly. If this is the case, then you may need to contact your internet provider, and see if you can rectify the issue.
Sometimes, certain ISP’s tend to go down, or go off for a period of time if there is a problem or a glitch, and this will usually happen for all households connected to the ISP. However, this is often fixed within a few hours or minutes.
There are lots of reasons why your router could be losing the internet connection all the time. One of these reasons is because of the WiFi range. If your router has a bad range, then using the internet from a room further away from the router will be a struggle.
Another problem could be interference. If your router is working at the same frequencies as other devices in your home, then there could be some interference affecting how well the router connects to the internet. Household items such as baby monitors and phones can cause a problem with the router, or interfere with the frequencies.
If your router frequently loses internet connection, then this could be down to outdated software or firmware on your router. This means that the router needs to be updated to the newest version so that it will function better.
If your router is still a problem, then you may want to check the cables, and see if the router is connected to the modem properly. Old, damaged or broken cables will cause an unreliable connection, and so this is often an issue for many households.
If any of the cables that connect to your router are malfunctioning, then the internet connection will be unstable. Try unplugging the cables, and swapping for new ones, or testing to see if they are working properly separately, so you can find which one is the problem.
How to fix a router that keeps losing internet connection
To rectify the problem with your router, there are various fixes that you can try, but these depend on what is causing the bad connection.
If you think that an overloaded router is the problem, then try disconnecting some devices, to lessen the strain on your router at one time. You should also check that it is the router that is the problem, and not the device. For instance, try disconnecting from the network on your phone, forgetting the network and then reconnecting to the WiFi network, this could work.
You can also reset your router to factory settings, and check to see which channel the router is connected to. Most routers have dual band capabilities, which works on a 2.4 GHz and a 5.0 GHz channel. The 5.0GHz channel is usually better quality, but if your router is struggling, then it may be best to keep your router connected on a 2.4GHz level bandwidth and it will run better.
You should also ensure that your router is up to date with the latest software and firmware as this will restrict and remove any bugs in the router, to help it run faster. On the other hand, if the range of the router seems to be the problem, then make sure that it is in the optimal position in your home.
Most router providers will advise not to place them on the ground, and lift it a few feet off the ground on a shelf or table. In addition, you want to keep it in a central location, and not in a corner. So many people place their router near or behind a TV, and that is no good either as this will affect the wireless performance massively.
Keep the router central and elevated so that it can get more signal and it should function much more effectively.
If you have tried all of the above, then it may not be an issue in your home, but a problem with the internet provider, and the network has gone down in your area. If this is the case, then it is best to contact them and see if the issue can be rectified!
