No, generally speaking, sitting in a recliner is perfectly safe and shouldn’t be bad for you! Often, recliners will provide comfort for us and a chance to lean back and relax with our legs comfortably raised.
These are comfortable, safe havens in our homes for many of us, but for others, they could be causing lots of problems, and you must know when it’s good to use a recliner and when it isn’t.
For those recovering from back surgery, a recliner can provide pain relief and support. You must ensure your back is correctly supported, though, to ensure you feel the benefits. Recliners can also be helpful for people that spend a lot of time on their feet, which can strain your back.
To ensure that your recliner is supporting you, ensure that your lower back is well supported. You can tuck a rolled towel or cushion against your back, too, for further support if you need it.

In some cases, yes, sleeping in a recliner can cause blood clots! Now before you panic, this isn’t overly common, but it’s always best to be aware of the side effects, isn’t it?
Sleeping in a recliner in an upright position can not only be uncomfortable but bad for you. In some cases, it raises the risk of deep-vein thrombosis and blood clots. Typically, we would see them in thighs or calves, but they can occur anywhere in the body and, left untreated, can pose a serious risk to your health!
These blood clots occur when people sit motionless with their arms or legs bent for extended periods. It’s why on long-haul flights, you are provided with exercises and flight socks to prevent any deep-vein thrombosis or blood clots from developing.
While blood clots pose a serious risk to your health, it’s worth noting that these are rare cases. So for most of us, sleeping in a recliner is unlikely to pose any long-term threats or health conditions and can be quite beneficial!
For those suffering from acid reflux, back pain, or pregnancy, sleeping on a recliner can provide you with a better night’s sleep. However, it is important if you are sleeping in a recliner to take some necessary steps to ensure you sleep well and don’t cause any harm to yourself.
Ensure that you have plenty of blankets to keep you warm at night and that your head and neck are properly supported with pillows. If possible, sleep with your legs supported in front of you.
It’s worth investing in some compression socks too. These will prevent blood pooling in your feet, keeping your blood well circulated, and hopefully avoiding a blood clot!

Are recliners bad for your neck?
Depending on the recliner’s fit and posture, yes, recliners can be bad for your neck! If the positioning isn’t quite right, you can experience mild to severe pain in your neck, as well as your back, legs, and ankles.
Reclining with your neck bent, in particular, can cause problems. Ideally, you want your neck to be straight and flush rather than forced forward.
However, forcing your neck into this position for extended periods can cause you to lose the natural curve in your neck, causing discomfort and leading to long-term problems.
Staying in these positions for long periods can cause your neck to stipend and strain your neck muscles. We notice this more when our neck is forced into awkward or unnatural positions, and a recliner chair can be one of these!
As most recliners are mass-produced these days, finding one that will fit and suit your neck perfectly can be challenging. You can, of course, pay to have one custom-made, but these are pricey and often too expensive for most people.
A more viable option is a neck pillow. You can make these yourself with a rolled towel or purchase neck pillows from most stores or online. These pillows will push your neck into its natural, forward position while keeping you comfortable.
Following some regular neck exercises can also help prevent the muscles from seizing up and stiffening during extended periods of use. If possible, try and avoid sitting in a recliner for too long. Briefly moving around the room will work wonders and can help those with recurring neck problems.
